Failure of 2011-2013 Ford Explorer Power Steering: What You Need to Know

In 2014, Ford issued a safety recall for only certain 2011-2013 Ford Explorer vehicles. It stated that “the affected vehicles may experience an intermittent connection in the electric power steering gear, which can cause a loss of the motor position sensor signal resulting in a shutdown of the power steering assist.” However, this recall was limited to Ford Explorers assembled at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant from May 17, 2010, through February 28, 2012, and failed to include many vehicles experiencing the same power-steering failures.

Although this recall addressed a small number of the problem vehicles and offered immediate repair free of charge to the owners, most Ford Explorer owners remain unassisted. Ford’s failure to perform a widespread safety recall has left thousands of vehicles on the road that may be affected by the same power steering defect. Hundreds of owners have complained that they were left with a costly bill to repair the defective steering mechanism because their vehicle was not included in the recall. These owners and those who may have yet to experience the frightening and dangerous defect in power steering deserve Ford to take complete responsibility.
