Motorcycle Roadway Safety Tips

Southern California may be the world capital of motorcycle culture, but it is also, unfortunately, a hotbed for motorcycle accidents. Motorcycle safety is important but their accidents can lead to expensive medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering, and fatalities. Whether it’s a normal commute to work or a recreational trip, negligent drivers pose the biggest threat to motorists. In 2020 alone, 5,579 motorcyclists were killed, which totaled 14 percent of all traffic fatalities. Although these numbers make riding a motorcycle seem extremely dangerous, there are ways to enjoy the ride safely.

Motorcycle Safety Tip #1 – Proper Licensing

Driving a car and riding a motorcycle require vastly different skill sets and knowledge. Both vehicles operate differently, and the motorist should be aware of those differences. Although many states have different requirements for licensing, all states require a motorcycle license to operate a motorcycle. A rider must pass a written and skills test by your states licensing agency to obtain the license. These tests ensure the rider has sufficient knowledge of the vehicle and proves they know how to operate it. Completing a motorcycle education course and passing the tests is the best way to ensure a rider operates the vehicle safely.

Motorcycle Safety Tip #2 – Bike Health & Safety Gear

Just like a normal car, a motorcycle should see maintenance on a regular schedule. Before every ride the rider should inspect all aspects to avoid any dangerous situations. Along with bike health, riders should ensure they wear safety gear such as helmets, jackets, or other safety clothing. The environment and weather also play a role in your safety gear, so choose gear that best suits your environment. In the event of an accident, your gear can potentially protect you from severe injury and may even save your life. More information on appropriate safety gear can be found here.

Motorcycle Safety Tip #3 – Be Aware!

The same level of awareness and safety should be applied when riding a motorcycle. Just as in a car, you should be fully alert and aware of what is going on around you. Unfortunately, motorcycles are harder to spot on the road when compared to cars and trucks and many larger vehicles lack total visibility of the road. While on the road obey all traffic lights, signs, etc., and leave plenty of room between yourself and other vehicles. You can increase your visibility by wearing reflective jackets or by always keeping your lights on. As with any motor vehicle, avoid any alcohol or drug use while operating a motorcycle. These substances will negatively affect your judgment, balance, and ability to shift gears. On the road it is impossible to predict what other vehicles will do, so always be  aware and safe.
