Boppy Lounger Pillow Recall

Millions are impacted by the Boppy lounger pillow recall

One of the biggest causes of injury and death in the United States is the use of dangerous products manufactured by some of the largest companies in the world. When these companies overlook their products safety, it often takes a tragedy to call attention to the dangers. Unfortunately, this was the case with the Boppy Lounger Pillow line of newborn pillows. On September 3, 2021, Boppy recalled the Boppy Original Newborn Lounger, Boppy Preferred Newborn Lounger, and the Pottery Barn Boppy Newborn Lounger for safety concerns. If the Boppy lounger pillow recall affects you, visit the company’s website for more information on the recall, Boppy.com.

Why Did Boppy Recall the Boppy Lounger Pillow?

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, these pillows pose a significant suffocation hazard to newborns. Because the pillows allow infants to sit at a slightly elevated angle rather than lying flat, newborns who do not have control of their neck and head can suffer from positional asphyxiation. In situations of positional asphyxiation, an object, such as a pillow wall, or the position of a newborn’s own head blocks the airway. Newborns lack the muscle development to change their positions, leading to suffocation. Eight reports of infant deaths associated with the Boppy Lounger line of pillows have surfaced between 2015 and 2020. The infants reportedly suffocated after parents placed them on their back, side, or stomach on the lounger pillow.

Boppy designed these pillows for short term use while a parent does other tasks. However, if the infant is on the pillow for too long and falls asleep, they can suffocate. The Boppy company is trying to make amends by recalling these pillows and offering a refund. The recall pertains to all models and colors of the Newborn Lounger, Preferred Newborn Lounger, and Pottery Barn Lounger.
