Investigating Ford Explorer Vehicle Power Steering
McCune Law Group, is investigating the need for a potential class action related to power steering failures in 2011-2013 Ford Explorer vehicles.
The ability to steer a vehicle accurately and easily is one most drivers consider given. Steering, after all, is one of a driver’s first reactions when unexpected events happen on a road – whether it’s inclement weather or avoiding a reckless driver. However, when this vital component fails to respond as expected, it can cause drivers to panic and potentially result in a collision. Power steering assist, especially, can help drivers of all strength levels pilot heavy vehicles like the Ford Explorer. 2011-2013 Ford Explorers have been experiencing intermittent or sometimes total failure of their power steering assist feature, forcing drivers to suddenly battle their vehicle to steer to safety.
Widespread Recalls Have Yet to Come
In 2014, Ford issued a safety recall for only certain 2011-2013 Ford Explorer vehicles. It stated that “the affected vehicles may experience an intermittent connection in the electric power steering gear, which can cause a loss of the motor position sensor signal resulting in a shut down of the power steering assist.” However, this recall was limited to Ford Explorers assembled at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant from May 17,2010 through February 28, 2012 and failed to include many vehicles experiencing the same power-steering failures.
Although this recall addressed a small number of the problem vehicles and offered immediate repair free of charge to the owners, most Ford Explorer owners remain unassisted. Ford’s failure to perform a widespread safety recall has left thousands of vehicles on the road that may be affected by the same power steering defect. Hundreds of owners have complained that they were left with a costly bill to repair the defective steering mechanism because their vehicle was not included in the recall. These owners and those who may have yet to experience the frightening and dangerous defect in power steering deserve for Ford to take complete responsibility.
