Hyundai ABS Defect: What You Need to Know

In 2023, the Vehicle Safety Defect Attorneys of McCune Law Group filed a class action lawsuit (Bailey Bennion v. Hyundai Motor) bringing claims of alleged consumer fraud and breach of warranty claims relating to the ABS systems of certain Hyundai vehicles.

The lawsuit alleged that Hyundai’s ABS defect recall did not go far enough to resolve the root cause of the ABS defect, leaving owners vulnerable to unreasonable safety consequences and expensive repair bills. The lawsuit further alleges that the ABS assembly—which is responsible for adjusting braking pressure to ensure a vehicle’s wheels don’t skid or hydroplane during inclement weather conditions—can lead to electrical shorts, which can cause vehicle fires, unintended brake application, and/or loss of braking power.

Common Issues Reported:

When the ABS in a vehicle is on the verge of failure, drivers may notice several warning signs.

 These include:

  • ABS Warning Light Illumination: When the dashboard ABS warning light is illuminated, that is a strong indicator that ABS failure may be imminent.
  • Vibrating Brake Pedal: Some drivers report experiencing a vibrating or pulsating brake pedal during rapid stops.
  • Grinding or Clicking Sounds: Certain affected vehicle owners have also reported unusual grinding or clicking noises upon braking, which may signal an issue with the ABS.
  • Reduced Braking Effectiveness: A failing ABS may also present as difficulty braking quickly or fully, especially in wet or slippery conditions.

If any of these symptoms are experienced, it’s crucial to address them promptly to ensure the safety and functionality of the vehicle’s braking system.
