Ford and Lincoln 360 Degree Camera Recall: What You Need to Know

In August 2023, Ford Motor Company recalled over 400,000 vehicles due to a dangerous 360-degree camera defect in models like the 2020-2023 Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and Lincoln Corsair. In the affected vehicles, the 360-degree camera video output may fail, which would prevent the backup camera from displaying properly, or at all. As evidenced by the Ford recall on the 360-degree cameras, this defect was widespread in many Ford or Lincoln models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) first opened an investigation in 2021 after Ford recalled vehicles for the same issue. With the emergence of the same issue in 2020-2023 Ford Explorers, Lincoln Aviators, Lincoln Corsairs, and other vehicles, it seems the problem was never truly resolved.

After the recall in 2023, affected vehicles had their rearview cameras and, if necessary, camera wiring replaced. In the case of some vehicle models, image processing module software was also updated. However, per Autoevolution, certain dealers uploaded the incorrect software. Affected owners will be notified via first-class mail next month, in May of 2025.

The affected vehicles that may experience 360-degree camera failure include:

  • 2020-2023 Ford Explorer
  • 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator
  • 2020-2023 Lincoln Corsair
  • Other recent model year Ford or Lincoln vehicles

The Dangers of Failing 360 Degree and Rearview Cameras

In today’s fast-paced world, advanced safety features like 360 degree cameras have become indispensable. These cameras provide a comprehensive view of the vehicle’s surroundings, assisting drivers in maneuvering their vehicles with precision and confidence. However, when these cameras malfunction or fail, the consequences can be severe and potentially life-threatening.

A failing 360-degree camera can result in various dangers, including:

  1. Impaired Rear Visibility: The rearview camera plays a critical role in helping drivers detect obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles when reversing or parking. A malfunctioning camera can lead to impaired visibility, increasing the risk of collisions or accidents.
  2. Parking Mishaps: Parallel parking and navigating tight spaces can be challenging without the aid of a properly functioning 360-degree camera. A failure in the camera system can make these maneuvers even more difficult, potentially resulting in property damage or personal injury.
  3. Increased Blind Spots: A comprehensive view of the vehicle’s surroundings is crucial to identify blind spots and ensure safe lane changes. If the 360-degree camera fails to provide accurate information, drivers may be unaware of potential hazards, leading to accidents on the road.
  4. Reduced Safety in Busy Areas: Urban areas, crowded parking lots, and high-traffic zones require heightened awareness to avoid accidents. When the 360-degree camera malfunctions, drivers are left vulnerable to potential hazards in these environments, compromising their safety and that of others.
